Student Success Through OER: Develop Self and Students

OER Academy: Student Success Through OER
Faculty and teaching staff are invited to participate in a three-workshop series on how OER contributes to student success. Participants will research OER materials they might wish to adopt or adapt for a class, identify ways that OER can support student learning and success in the classroom, learn about copyright and legal issues, consider options for authoring OER, and create a plan for incorporating OER into one of their future classes. Registration for individual workshops will be offered, but participants who attend all three and turn in a plan will earn a digital badge. We hope to see you there!
Student Success Through OER: Develop Self and Students
The third workshop in the OER Academy workshop series will discuss professional development options, including original research articles and conference presentations. Topics will include how OER ties into HIPs and SoTL, open pedagogy, authoring OER, and ALG grants (types and uses). Participants will have access to a D2L site for the series.

However, we do encourage seasoned department heads to attend and share their experiences. Participants will gather for three meetings during the fall and three meetings during the spring to discuss administrative issues including:
- Budget management and fiscal concerns
- Mentoring faculty and documenting teaching excellence
- Preparing faculty for the annual review
- Considering ethics in leadership positions
- Navigating conflict resolution and student complaints, and
- Preparing faculty for promotion and tenure
The series seeks to foster a common cultural dialogue of leadership at the University of North Georgia and is open to all department heads.

Topic: Applied Learning: LEAP and HIP assignment models for the arts and humanities

Applied learning is a LEAP (Liberal Education and America’s Promise) essential learning outcome. In this workshop, you will join in discussion about three assignments in which applied learning is integrated with High Impact Practices (HIPs), such as final projects (or scaled-down versions of capstone projects), e-portfolios, collaborative projects, and community-based learning. These assignments are suitable for arts and humanities courses—especially art history, music history, theater history, film history, literature history, and modern language courses.

Topic: Small Teaching Online: Incremental approaches to improving online instruction
Led by: Rebecca Johnston
Small teaching is a phrase coined by James M. Lang to describe an incremental approach to improving our instruction. Darby Flowers joins forces with Lang to also address online teaching. They explain how minor modifications to our teaching can have a major impact on student learning. In this session you will learn some of the small teaching strategies that have worked and discuss small teaching concepts. By making slight changes to your online class activities, there is a significant improvement in student engagement.
