Global Accessibility Awareness Day

Fix Your Online Content on May 19

Mark your calendar. May 19, 2022, is the 11th annual Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD)!

The 24-hour global event challenges content creators to make digital learning content more accessible. The day features live events, webinars, and recorded training sessions.

Blackboard Ally, the accessibility software integrated with eLearning@UNG (D2L), is participating with “Fix Your Content Day.”

Ally wants to mobilize instructors and staff to fix as many digital course files as possible using Blackboard Ally.

Common Accessibility Issues

Ally automatically checks eLearning module content and rates it with an accessibility score (100 is best) and a color-coded gauge (green is good, red is bad). Ally flags D2L content that has accessibility issues and provides guidance to fix them.

Accessibility issues commonly flagged by Ally include:

  • document contrast (text with low contrast between the text and its background)
  • images without a description (Atl text is missing)
  • documents without headings (H1, H2, H3, heading tags are missing or out of sequence)

Ally Provides Alternative Formats

Ally automatically converts eLearning content into alternative formats that students can download. Available formats include tagged PDF (the most used alternative format at UNG), mobile-friendly HTML, ePub, MP3 audio, electronic braille, and BeeLine Reader.
