Must-Have Family Day T-Shirts and a Special Invite to Join Us for Lunch

If you haven’t already registered for Family Day on 1 October, click here. (Click there anyway — awesome t-shirts you can order whether or not you’re coming to Family Day. But hurry! The deadline for ordering shirts is Friday, 16 September at noon.)

Also, if you’re heading toward the mountains for Family Day, join us in Downtown Dahlonega for lunch — parents, siblings, your UNG students and cadets, grandparents — the whole family is welcome. Prices at our favorite little restaurant are generally what you’d expect for a college town, averaging around $15 per person, depending on drinks. Space is limited though, so be sure to RSVP the number of seats you need for your family asap! You’ll get to meet students, parents, PFA Council members, plus you’ll have a great meal too.

To RSVP, email us with the number of seats you’d like to reserve (and whether your student is cadet or non-cadet) as soon as possible. We’ll let you know once reservations are full and we’ll email your confirmation and the location. See you there!

We hope all UNG Parents will get involved in their student’s college community on a level that serves the village! Contact us for info if you’d like to get involved! It’s so much fun getting to know the other parents in this great little community!

The PFA Council voted to donate $750, and we are hoping the UNG Community will help with individual donations. If you would like to contribute — any amount makes a difference — click here. Thank you!

6 MAY 2016

Congratulations, Graduates and Parents!

If your son or daughter is among the 1,200 graduates this semester, we want you to know how proud we are of your student’s accomplishments. We wish each of them the very best in their future endeavors. Likewise, we know that you, the families and friends of our UNG graduates, have supported each student’s academic efforts along the way, so we congratulate you, too, on a job well done! May you be blessed in the next phase of your family’s journey.

PFA SCHOLARSHIPS ARE BIG NEWS ON CAMPUS. Help Us Double to $20k in 2017!

aha-scholarshipsEXCITING NEWS from your PFA Council includes our greatest accomplishment to date — We voted to award $10,000 in scholarships!

• $2,500 for UNG’s first students to study in Russia
• $2,000 to entice top-tier cadets to the Corps
• $2,500 to UNG Honors students for research projects
• $3,000 for cadets in UNG’s new Cyber program

The Big Change — As the PFA Council met with various UNG professionals, it became obvious that parents can make a difference for our community by helping attract top-performing students, and by helping students with study abroad, research and other educational expenses.

Our Goal — We need you to help us double our scholarship awards next year to $20k. Our students have a better chance to achieve excellence when they are supported financially.

How You Can Help — Every dollar counts when we work together to improve educational opportunities for our students’ future Alma Mater. The scholarships we were able to award this year came primarily from your active PFA membership and fundraising projects. We deeply thank you for your support now and in the future!

Wondering When UNG Will Send You a Bill for Tuition?

Kelly Dyar, a PFA Council member who is also a professor at another college and the mom of a UNG student, wrote a helpful post about the information you can expect to receive as the parent of a UNG student. 10 OCTOBER 2015

Welcome to the new PFA Council Members

Congratulations to the new 2015-16 PFA Council, listed here on our contact page. We are deeply grateful for their willingness to serve. That said, volunteering with the UNG Parents & Family Association is more than just serving on council. It takes leaders of all kinds, leaders who are willing to put aside their own lives at times for consistent, reliable and dependable service.

This kind of volunteering does not necessarily mean serving on council. It can mean all sorts of things like asking Dahlonega businesses to join our discount program, organizing a family picnic, contributing articles for our various social media outlets, attending New Student Orientations as a parent representative for the day, preparing food and professional displays for military receptions, and so much more. If you would like to get involved, send us an email today!

4 OCTOBER 2015

Thank you to our Out-Going PFA Council Members

Special thanks to retiring council members Lisa Blaylock, Debra Scott Tyson and Craig Allen for serving a full year on the 2014-15 PFA Council. Each of them gave of their time, skills, considerable wisdom and intellect to help make the UNG Family stronger, smarter and more efficient. Projecting a professional, quality image for UNG was a key factor of that council, demonstrating what the UNG family network can be. Besides those listed above, the council was also comprised of Pete Mistr, Rebecca Lore, Michelle McGaughey and Kelly Dyar, each of whom will serve again this year.

Special thanks also to Chris Steinhardt, Nanette Waters, Elizabeth Nunn, Jennifer Gorell and Christy Campbell Barge for sharing their time and talents with us as members of council for part or most of the year, and to student reps Sarah Adams and Asa Anderson. Likewise, Darcy Hayes has been a trusted source of help for all of us as our staff liaison. We wish our out-going council members the best for them and their students and alumni for the future!

PFA Active Members — We need you to vote!

All amendments to the PFA bylaws must be approved at one of the two semi-annual on-campus meetings. The following bylaw addition has been approved by the Parents & Family Association Council and will be on this fall’s ballot. Active PFA members will have an opportunity to vote in-person at the 8:30 a.m. meeting on 3 October in the Green Room of the Dining Hall, or, you may vote by absentee ballot online. Be on the lookout for ballots coming to your email in a few weeks. Here is the Bylaw amendment proposal for your advance review:

Proposed Bylaw Addition – 3.1.5“Any Council member whose son/daughter graduates in the Spring or Summer shall remain an active member until the expiration of their current term without having to pay the annual dues for the current year. If the Council member’s son/daughter graduates in December, then the Council member may pay the half-year fee to remain an active member until December or the full year fee to remain an active member through the following October.”

This amendment allows PFA members who hold a council position to fulfill their commitment after their son or daughter graduates without having to pay an additional membership fee. Memberships run through May 31 while council terms run through the October Family Day meeting. You can read the full, current bylaws here. If you have any questions about this amendment, please let us know.

Is Your Student Experiencing Homesickness?

It’s perfectly normal and practically a time-honored tradition for students to feel a deep sense of homesickness during the first two weeks of residential college life, and beyond. The good news is that most homesickness resolves itself by the end of first semester, but for some the transition is more difficult or takes longer or requires a campus search for more focused help. We are discussing these topics at length on the PFA’s Facebook page and in our UNG Parents and Cadet Parents “closed” Facebook groups. To join one of our private groups, email us.
