Day 3 – Rise and Shine

Posted by on September 24, 2012

Today’s miles: 2.1  Today’s paddling miles: 2.1  Cumulative miles: 42.8  Cumulative paddling miles: 14.4

I’m chalking this up to being exhausted from the last few weeks of intense preparation: I slept for ten hours last night.

Observations: I’ve seen more NoTrespassing signs in the last 24 hours than at any other time in my life.  Property owners post signs to protect their privacy and to ward off disturbance to their property, and you see a few along all of the rivers that I have paddled, but nothing like this.  In one stretch, I probably saw 40 signs in less than a half mile, mostly different, indicating to me different property owners.  Not all signs were as friendly as simply “No Trespassing”.  I am making no judgment, nor do I have enough information to draw any conclusions, but it does make me wonder if this says something about the community, the people who have paddled down this stretch of river, or both, or perhaps there is just a particularly effective sign salesman in the area.

My Hennessey hammock: No trace camping on a beautiful site where I had permission from generous land owners.  An interesting note about that: I’ve known this family for 24 years and while we are not close, they are friends, but Jerry arranged permission for me to camp.  I doubt that the property owners knew who they were giving permission to; they just gave permission to a stranger vouched for by a neighbor.  I like that..4
