It was 38˚F when I set out from Trail’s End Resort and Campground at 7:10 this morning. It was a little breezy, but not bad, and I had a nearly full moon and headlamp for guidance. My hands were cold for about 45 minutes, but they warmed up like the rest of me after that.
Lake Seminole is nothing like it appears on my maps. There is actually very little open water, and even in what appears to be open water, there are grass patches right at the surface down to within a mile of the dam, except in the marked channel. Once I got out of the protection of trees, the wind really picked up (measured at 20-25 mph with my anemometer) and the lake quickly became frothy with whitecaps. The weeds apparently helped keep the waves from getting too big, but in the last mile or so before I reached the campground, they were running 2 to 2 1/2 feet and presented some risk of broaching, since they were from astern. managed, though, and am now snug in my tent, ready to go through the lock at 0800 and start my last dye trace run.
