Safety issues

Posted by on October 23, 2012

Being out here by myself and no longer being twenty years old have caused me to be pretty thoughtful about safety. Two cases in point.
1. The banks are quite high here, about 40 feet, and I didn’t want to chance a fall trying to climb, so I paddled until I spotted a decent cleft in the bank that also had a decent landing and tie-up spot. A broken leg out here could be pretty serious.
2. I was pretty sweaty, sticky, and stinky from paddling hard all day, so I really wanted a bath, but it was dusk, a fine time to get in trouble with an alligator. Solution: I found a protected spot, not ideal for a bath and washing today’s clothes, but well-protected from a stealthy ‘gator.
