Refit day 4 – 9/30/12

Posted by on September 30, 2012

Geez, there’s a lot to do.  I MIGHT be ready to go tomorrow, but after looking at the weather forecast, I’ve decided to push the getting back on the river (lake) until Tuesday morning.  Yeah, yeah, I know I’m a sissy, but what’s new?  I would rather be really well-organized and a day behind, or at least that’s my story.

I’ve finally created a spreadsheet to calculate kilometers and miles traveled paddling and total.  The distance traveled but not paddling will be a mix of walking and bumming rides, mostly around dams.  You’d better believe that I will portage around that class IV rapid in Columbus.  Class II will be my limit for paddling the way I am loaded, but I will judge each rapid as I come to it.  I’m not much of a whitewater paddler anyway – too exciting for me.  The mileages are based on my digitized measurements from Google Earth, so they should be pretty close.  I’ve added a couple of spreadsheet programs to the iPad, so I’ll try to keep this updated as I move down the river.  I’m going back now to add that information to the earlier posts.

You gotta love spreadsheets. I set it up so that all I enter is the day’s ending river kilometers from Apalachicola Bay. If I didn’t paddle the whole way, then I override the spreadsheet formula with the kilometers that I actually paddled. Excel does the rest.  I love spreadsheets.
