I never took the time to weigh everything when I set out below Helen Sunday, so I did that this morning. I replenished things like food and water to typical loads before weighing. These weights also include a little trash that I picked up at a couple of campsites, but that’s something I normally do, so I included it. By eliminating a few things that I might want but don’t need and adding a couple of items that I really will need, I expect to reduce my gear weight by nearly 47 pounds. There are some more rapids and a lot of portages, so I think that I will be glad to be rid of the weight.
Beginning weight:
All scientific equipment, food, water, camping gear: 300.6 pounds. Boat: 65 pounds. Me: 192.8 pounds. Gross weight: 558.4 pounds
Refit weight for the rest of the trip:
All scientific equipment, food, water, camping gear: 253.8 pounds. Boat: 65 pounds. Me: 192.8 pounds. Gross weight: 511.6 pounds
I intend to go back and measure fairly precise distances covered during the first 5 days, add those things to the earlier posts, and then maintain a running total. I’m just not sure that I can make the time to do that every night, but I’ll try.
