The Department of Political Science and International Affairs presented these awards as the 2017 2018 school year concluded in May:

● UNG Gainesville Outstanding Bachelor’s-Degree Graduate: Alyssa Cross.
• Frank M. Smith award: Matthew Caudell. The Frank M. Smith Award is presented annually to the graduating senior with the highest grade point average in political science.
• David Potter Award: Caroline Miller. The David Potter Award is presented annually to the graduating senior with the highest grade point average in international affairs.
• Barry Friedman Legacy Award: Heather Bryan. The Barry Friedman Legacy Award is presented annually to a MPA student graduating with the highest grade point average.

Two international-affairs majors Zachary Navara and Christopher Bissett, members of the Corps of Cadets were members of the UNG Ranger Challenge team that competed in the 2018 Sandhurst International Competition in April at West Point. The UNG team placed first among eight Army military-college teams and won the ROTC Cup.

Two of our students received recognition by the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program, sponsored by the U. S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Esteban Reyes, an international-affairs major, received a $3500 scholarship to study in Argentina. Katherine Torres, a political-science major, was selected as an alternate.

Elijah Hendrix, an international-affairs major, was a tutor in Russian during this summer’s Summer Language Institute, which UNG hosted on the Dahlonega campus. Elijah attended the institute in 2016 and developed his skill in the language. Elijah has completed two study abroad trips.

In the summer of 2017, Elijah participated in a program called Study Russian Abroad in Baltics. He traveled to Daugavplis, Latvia then Tallinn, Estonia. This past spring of 2018, Elijah completed his second study abroad trip in Tartu, Estonia at the Estonian National Defense College.

Hutch Crawford, an international-affairs and Chinese major, has been selected by the university’s ROTC Chinese Language Flagship Program to travel to China for a 10 month Study Abroad experience during his senior year. UNG’s program is the only ROTC-designated Flagship Program in the nation.
