Year of the Books Chat: June

World building is a necessary writing skill. Whether its fantasy or contemporary literature, world building helps convince your reader that the setting is genuine. World building is best understood as creating a new fictional world, but it can also mean modifying the world around you with different characteristics.

I write fantasy, so I spend a lot of time thinking about fictional worlds—and most of that time is spent on wishing I lived there! Here are my three favorite series based in another world:

  1. The Song of the Lioness Quartet by Tamora Pierce—Tortall
  2. The Time Quintet by Madeleine L’Engle—Alternate Earths
  3. The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien—Middle-earth
