“The old man before me had a snowy white beard and no eyes.”

The old man before me had a snowy white beard and no eyes. To be granted the ability to read fortunes, the gods had demanded a sacrifice from him in return.

“I come,” I said, “to discover if my battle with my rebellious general tomorrow will end in my victory.” The old man grunted and poked at the dancing fire before him with a bull’s horn and out popped a hazy apparition that spoke in a language long since forgotten.

“It is decided.” the old man said, “Both shall perish and neither receive the throne.”
