First Line Friday: “The light flickered on and off.”

In our quest to encourage creativity, we post a writing prompt every other Friday. Write a story with the prompt as the first line. Share your story below or on social media using the tag #FirstLineFriday. We can’t wait to see your stories!

“The light flickered on and off.”

The light flickered on and off. And stayed on this time, thankfully. Rochelle was not in the mood to spend her evening fumbling around her apartment and knocking into objects. At least with the lights on, she could see what she’d be eating. As she dug into her lo mein, she listened to the usual sounds from the other tenants. Room 4B was watching Queer Eye. Room 4F (across the hall) was shouting about money. Room 4E was hosting an elephant party, by the sounds of it. And she, room 4C, was trying to eat greasy fried noodles as quietly as humanely possible, feeling like an imposter within her neighbors’ lives.
