UNG Accounting Students To Offer Free Tax Preparation Services

Accounting students within the Mike Cottrell College of Business at the University of North Georgia (UNG) will be preparing tax returns for members of the north Georgia community as well as other UNG students beginning February 5.

The accounting students, under the direction of Lisa Nash, accounting lecturer within the Mike Cottrell College of Business at UNG, are certified by testing through the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The service is free to the community as part of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, which is sponsored by the IRS.

The VITA program offers free tax services to people who generally make $54,000 or less. The students prepare basic 1040 tax returns, schedules, and related credit. Federal and state returns are prepared while taxpayers are present and tax returns are filed electronically with direct deposit available, if desired.

Tax preparation services will be available on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4 to 7 pm, February 5 through March 7 in room 209 of the Newton Oakes Building at UNG, 82 College Cir, Dahlonega, GA 30597.

The service is by appointment only. With the numerous changes in the 2018 tax law, please do not hesitate to schedule an appointment for assistance with your 2018 tax return.
