How can I be a more confident business graduate?

As cliché as it sounds, confidence is key. Even the most intellectually competent worker can be unsuccessful if they are not confident in their abilities. Negative environments, judgmental co-workers, and adverse thoughts can cause low self-esteem. Having confidence, however, can change the way you react to these situations. Graduates of the Mike Cottrell College of Business are known for their topical knowledge in their field of study and their ability to lead. But, part of leadership is confidence.

What are some ways you can build your confidence and become a stronger student? Here are four ways to be a Confident Cottrell business or technology student:

1.     Say what you mean

You are intelligent and capable, so why are you speaking apprehensively? Avoid phrases such as, “If you think” or “I am not really sure.” Phrases like these show a lack of confidence in your abilities. If you are not sure of what you are saying, why should others? Speak assertively. You will first, appear confident and second, feel confident.

2.     Avoid gossip

If you have ever worked in an office setting, you know how petty some people can be. Negative comments, deprecating looks, and false statements are enough to make any person feel jaded. In the same way you do not want to be the topic of office gossip, your co-workers do not either. Be positive and build others up! Instill confidence in them and they will to you.

3.     Except failure

While failing is not the most exciting outcome, it is necessary to learn. Do not be afraid to be wrong every once in a while. Some of the best ideas come from crazy ones that would never work. Your boss will appreciate putting yourself out there and seeing where your ideas take you. You should be confident in all your ideas because there is always a benefit. Just as others can learn from your successes, you can learn from your failures.

4.     Ask for help

Sorry, but you are not perfect. Even if your mom says you don’t, you have flaws. One of the greatest aspects of working as part of a team is that your co-worker can fill the gaps. That is only if you ask for them to help. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness or unintelligence. In fact, it is the opposite. Once you start asking for help, you will become confident to complete the task by yourself.
