January is National Personal Self-Defense Awareness Month

“If you were targeted for a violent attack, the only guaranteed defender you have is you… YOU are your best defense.”

Most people don’t believe they will become a victim of crime. They prefer not to think about it and don’t take proactive steps to protect themselves, their residence or their family.

So, how do criminals choose their targets? The crime victims, more often than not, offer themselves up as targets by the way they behave:

  • By being distracted
  • Under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Disorganized
  • Unprepared

As a seasoned criminal said “We don’t pick our victims, they pick themselves”

Unfortunately as a group, women are more often the victim of crimes. Women alone may certainly be more attractive targets for assault and other crimes simply because most are smaller than men, and therefore offer the path of least resistance.  Criminals feed off of vulnerability, so stay alert to avoid becoming a statistic.  Did you know that approximately 95% of crimes can be easily prevented?

Where to begin . . .

  • Once you are ready to take personal responsibility for yourself, learn how to keep you & your loved ones safe.
  • Make it a point to enroll in a local self-defense class. While you are at it, take some friends with you.
  • If you can’t avoid a situation, knowing how to use your personal weapons (hands, elbows, knees & feet) against your attacker can give you the time you need to escape.
