The Arabian Nights

“Zimmerman has a genius for building stage spectaculars from the most basic, old-fashioned materials.“Nights” is as timeless as the stories it contains and as immediate as an ad lib.”-SFGATE

“…Ms. Zimmerman has orchestrated a seamless narrative of recital, song and carefully stylized movements in which stories endlessly beget other stories, like the boxes within boxes in a Chinese puzzle toy.”-NEW YORK TIMES

The Arabian Nights is a collection of darker stories intended for adults, as told by Scheherazade, a young haram girl who must create cliffhangers night after night to save her own life.  Now in the expert hands of playwright Mary Zimmerman (Metamorphoses, The Secret in the Wings) a twelve-member cast enacts Scheherazade’s tales of love, lust, comedy, and dreams, drawing audiences close with her trademark originality in staging.  We begin to see the mesmerizing theme of how the magic of storytelling holds the power to change people, and are reminded that the struggle to preserve cultural beauty did not end with Scheherazade.
