Text-Based Versus Video-Based Discussions

Text-based discussions have been used in online learning for many years. Thanks to technology improvements, video-based discussions (students record a video response) are being used to enhance engagement.

Do students prefer a text-based discussion over video-based? Is one form of discussion more effective for student engagement and learning than another?

In a paper posted on The Journal of Online Educators, “The Impact of Text-Based Discussions on Student Engagement and Interactivity in an Online Course,” the authors examine the two modalities. They also share their thoughts on overcoming resistance to new technology.
