How to Make Video Chapters – Part 2

Last month we explored two ways to create Kaltura Video Chapters.

This month we show how to create a lecture using video and a PowerPoint presentation.

Why Use Video Chapters?

Students can jump to any slide in a video using chapters. Add searchable tags to make information easier to find.

There is no need to remake the entire video when slide updates are needed. Simply insert or delete slides as needed.

Create the Slides

Make your PowerPoint slides without animation or transitions. These effects do not work with a video chapter slideshow.

Select the slide dimensions (Normal or Widescreen) before uploading a PowerPoint presentation.

Upload a Deck: Make a multi-slide PowerPoint presentation widescreen (16:9 aspect ratio) 14.23 in x 8 in (1366 px x 768 px), or normal (4:3 aspect ratio) TV monitor size 10.67 in x 8 in (1024 px x 768 px).

Upload Single Slides: When uploading individual images (JPEG or PNG) to a video chapter slideshow, make all of the slides the same size.

You can add a deck of slides to a video and then upload additional individual images as needed.

Add Chapters to Audio or Video in My Media

Kaltura Video Chapters can be used with media uploaded to My Media in eLearning@UNG (D2L). Chapters cannot be added to YouTube videos.

See the previous story Kaltura Basics: How to Make Video Chapters – Part 1 for instructions.

Embed the Video

Videos with chapters must be embedded into an eLearning@UNG (D2L) for the chapters feature to work.

1 – In My Media, click the media’s title; then click the Details button (below the media player). Click Share.

2 – Select an embed code size of about 400 px wide. This will allow students to watch the media on a variety of devices.

Students can click the expand video icon (two arrows) on the video player for a full-screen video. Tablet users can simply zoom in on the video player.

Watch the Interactive Video Chapters Demo

For this demonstration, Kaltura Capture was used to record a lecture using the computer’s built-in microphone and video camera. A PowerPoint presentation with multiple slides was uploaded to create chapters.

Hover your mouse over the video to reveal the navigation (top left) and slideshow view icons (top right).

The default setting has the PowerPoint slides as the main (larger) image, with the video in the lower right-hand corner.

Use your mouse to hover the cursor over the video. Click the arrows icon on the top right to make the video big and the slideshow small. Click the image icon just below the arrows to change the view. You can select the view as just the slides, slides next to the video, or return to the default (small video) setting.

Watch my brief video and follow the instructions to learn how Kaltura Video Chapters works with video and slides.

Open and close the chapter navigation menu by hovering over the video and clicking the “three platters” in the top left of the video. Click the menu icon again to close the chapters.
