Tip: Essay Alert

An instructor can require students to submit a draft written assignment to Smarthinking for review prior to an assignment deadline. The instructor then reviews alerts to determine whether individual students need immediate assistance.

The instructor can then schedule a conference with a student, provide written feedback, or suggest a Smarthinking online tutoring session.

The student will click the “Submit My Writing or Career Documents” link on the Smarthinking homepage to submit an essay.

How to Submit an Essay for Review

  1. A student should enter Smarthinking from within his or her course in D2L. A first-time Smarthinking user will be asked to verify his or her email address.
  2. Click “Submit My Writing or Career Documents” and select a subject from the list.
  3. Fill out the essay submission form. All required fields are marked with an asterisk (*). Be detailed. The more the tutor knows about the assignment the better.
  4. Click the Browse button and locate the essay on the device or connected cloud account. The essay must be saved in standard word processing formats such as Word (.doc or .docx), Rich Text Format (.rtf), or plain text (.txt).
  5. Click Submit.
  6. Review the submission and click “Confirm Submission.” A pop-up message will confirm the submission.

The student will receive an email when the review is ready, typically within 24 hours.
