John Leyba

Dr. John Leyba began the 2020 summer semester as UNG’s new Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics (CSM).

“Dr. John Leyba is exceptionally qualified, with more than 30 years of chemistry higher education, academic leadership, and industry experience,” said provost and senior vice president of academic affairs Dr. Chadron Gille. “Leyba joined the faculty in 2014 as head of the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry after working for Newman University in Wichita, Kansas, for 12 years and with subcontractors at the Savannah River Site, the Rocky Flats Environmental Technology Site, and other facilities of the U.S. Department of Energy for more than 11 years.

Passionate about UNG, Leyba served as CSM’s interim dean for the past year and associate dean since 2018. Leyba’s commitment to the strength and future of CSM was evident as he led authorship of the College’s 2018-2023 strategic plan.

Leyba holds a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from Northeast Missouri State University, (now Truman State University) and a doctoral degree in nuclear chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. His research interests involve rapid chemical separations and quantification using traditional and green techniques. In addition, Leyba has a keen interest in the Manhattan Project and the nuclear complex.
