Barbara K. Townsend Dissertation Award
In honor of the life and career of Barbara K. Townsend, the National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students (NISTS) has established the annual Barbara K. Townsend Dissertation Award for dissertation research related to transfer students, and invites nominations for 2012. This call is for nominations for the fourth annual award.
NISTS encourages the development and dissemination of knowledge that informs the academic and practitioner communities on transfer. Criteria will highlight the significance of the dissertation topic to the advancement of our knowledge about and/or effective service to transfer students. To this end, the Institute invites faculty to nominate exceptional dissertations, regardless of methods or academic discipline.
- The dissertation must have been successfully defended and filed with the nominee’s graduate division or school between September 1, 2011, and August 31, 2012.
The chair of the dissertation committee is asked to write the nomination letter, which should contain information relevant to the work of the award committee (e.g., importance of the topic, methodological highlights). In the event of the chair’s inability to submit this letter, a nomination letter from another dissertation committee member will be accepted.
An electronic copy of the dissertation should accompany the letter of nomination.
All nomination materials should be submitted electronically to the award committee chair, in Microsoft Word or .PDF format. The chair will return an acknowledgement of receipt.
A faculty member may nominate no more than two candidates.
The award commitee chair must receive all nominations by November 19, 2012.
The recipient of the Barbara K. Townsend Dissertation Award should agree to attend and present at the annual NISTS Annual Meeting.
The nominations will be reviewed and judged by a national panel, with exclusion of judges associated with the nominee’s institution. The award committee chair will announce theBarbara K. Townsend Dissertation Award winner at the NISTS 11th Annual Meeting in Frisco (Dallas), Texas, January 30-February 1, 2013.
