Remembering fallen service members on Memorial Day

The university will be closed on Monday in observance of Memorial Day, and I hope you will take time to remember the service members who have died defending our freedom and democracy and thank those who continue to serve. The loss of 1st Lt. Weston Lee is fresh on our hearts and minds. One of our own, he was killed just a few weeks ago and laid to rest earlier today at Arlington National Cemetery. While his death was a heartbreaking reminder to our University community of the sacrifices made by those called to serve in the military, as one of only six senior military colleges in the nation, we remain proud to be a part of our students’ preparation to become military officers.

I hope you will also take time this weekend to cheer on our UNG Nighthawks baseball team, who will be competing for the national championship in its first-ever trip to the NCAA DII College World Series. The first game is on Saturday at 2 p.m. EDT (3 p.m. CDT) in Grand Prairie, Texas, and you can access video and live stats at the tournament website.

This weekend is the unofficial beginning of summer for many, and I wish you safe travels, fair winds and sunny skies as you enjoy this time with family and friends.
