Summer Days Don’t Have to Mean Summer Daze: Channeling Energy into Summer Writing Projects
Presented by J. Michael Rifenburg
With summer coming soon, many academics are mentally building writing schedules to fill lazy summer days. But when June rolls around, we find ourselves staring aimlessly at a blinking cursor or hiding from our writing projects behind Netflix shows and pool time. This interactive presentation guides participants through several methods to build and sustain a productive summer writing schedule while still making time for important rest.

Engaging Pedagogy Exchange: Embedding Experiential Learning Opportunities into Curriculum

Wednesday April 10, 2024
12 p.m.-1 p.m.

Topic: Pedagogy to Practice: Embedding Experiential Learning Opportunities into Curriculum
Speaker: Katherine Adams
Experiential learning has been gaining significant momentum as higher education institutions look to amplify AAC&U’s high-impact practices, such as service learning, problem and project-based learning, global learning, and work-integrated learning in and out of the classroom. Experiential learning programs will further develop their professional and academic skills and knowledge. As faculty analyze their course content while reflecting on the practical skill sets and needs of their fields, we will conceptualize how to help students address problems that engage the larger social community of learners and future practitioners. This workshop will review 10 best practices of experiential learning, provide examples, and collaboratively brainstorm on how to embed experiential learning into our classroom assignments and activities.

Engaging Pedagogy Exchange: Designing Assignments to Integrate Learning

Wednesday February 14, 2024
12 p.m.-1 p.m.

Topic: Written Reflections 2.0: Designing Assignments to Integrate Learning
Speaker: Miriam Moore
Reflection assignments raise a number of questions: what’s the difference between a play-by-play recount and a reflection? What does deep or critical reflection look like? How do we design and respond to reflection assignments to help students integrate knowledge, theory, and/or practice? Can we teach students to write reflections in ways that support learning more effectively? If so, how? This workshop explores these questions and offers suggestions for designing, introducing, and responding to written reflections. In addition to an overview of current research on reflective practice, participants will receive links to sample assignments, rubrics, and teaching handouts.

Saying What Others Have Said, So You Can Say What You Want to Say: Writing a Literature Review
Presented by J. Michael Rifenburg
One of the more popular college writing textbooks is called “They Say / I Say.” The premise of this book is that all writers, from first-year students to full professors, ground their arguments in current arguments. No one writes in a vacuum. Academics use the phrase “literature review” to capture the “They Say” part of arguments. But while many of us know what a literature is supposed to do, actually writing a literature review is one of the more challenging parts of academic writing. This presentation covers common moves inherent in literature reviews across various disciplines. By pointing to examples and breaking apart these examples, participants arrive at a stronger sense of how to build an effective literature review.

Topic: Harness Bracketing and the Cognitive Cycle: Explore Transformative Learning Theory
Speaker: Michele Hill
Transformative Learning Theory integrates an individual’s past frames of reference and provides insight into the adult learners’ mindset. In this session, we will explore the use of the Bracketing exercise to identify assumptions regarding the content, which can serve as a valuable tool for instructors to gauge students’ attitudes towards challenging courses, including those that are less enjoyable. Additionally, utilizing the Cognitive Cycle activity fosters a transformative environment that shifts perspective, supports classroom mental well-being, and cultivates student success.

Topic: An Undergraduate Path from Questions to Conferences: Exploration of High-Impact Practice (HIP) Undergraduate Research in the Classroom and Beyond
Speaker: Ralph Hale
Scholarship is a defining pillar of academia, aiming to gain knowledge and understanding that can be shared with scientific peers, students, and the general public. In this program we will discuss how undergraduate students can get involved in research, a High-Impact Practice (HIP) recognized by the AAC&U. In the classroom, students can turn research questions into empirical designs capable of collecting data to test hypotheses. They then can analyze and interpret results within the context of the larger field and literature. Dissemination of findings can occur inside the classroom and beyond through oral presentation, research posters, conferences, manuscript drafting, and publication. Successful implementation across a range of student expertise levels will be discussed.
